Outside of the Office

Here's a little taste of the things I'm involved with outside of the office :

Boatbuilding & Sailing

They say that boats are simply a hole in the water, into which you pour money! It's true and I've become quite good at it! :

  • Restoration of Pip - A short photo journal of 'Pip', My Santana 22.
  • Blaze of Glory - Story of how I pulled a crew together to build a 24' Trimaran in 48hours for the Discovery Channel
  • Grace Quan - In 2003 I worked on a replica of a 40' Chinese Fishing Junk for the SF Maritime Museum.
  • Far Out - Information about how I constructed a 17' glass reinforced ply catamaran in my backyard.

I learned how to build boats from Robert Darr at the Arques School of Boatbuilding. - It's a small school with only a handful of full-time students, and one of the few remaining places to learn a skill that is rapidly disappearing from our collective knowledge.

Cycling & Adventures

I have travelled much of the world by bike... some 25,000kms (Equivalent to once round the world!) through numerous countries in South America, Asia, and Europe. - A bicycle is a great way to travel. I love how it gets you off the beaten path, and into the lives of real people.

  • Telecommuting from Cairo
I spent a month travelling in the middle-east while working at the same time. Here's a few fun videos from my trip.
  • Beach Sailing in Baja
We took my 17' catamaran down to Baja California on the roof of my Jeep, and then sailed it from Loreto to La Paz. For several days there was no wind, but when it came, it came strong.
  • From Bankok to Kathmandu by bike
The accout of my 5000km journey accross SE Asia with my friend Richard. It is the longest ride I've made. We had the pleasure of being arrested by police in Tibet on suspicion of spying. Quite exciting!

Thoughts on Life, Government & The Economy

  • Tips for applying to a job from Craigslist
I wrote this in late '05 in response to the quantity of awful responses to my job posting on Craigslist. It was reposted to 'Best of Craigslist' and picked up on numerous blogs including one run by Microsoft HR who validated many of the suggestions.
